Vegas Zatanna by dfridolfs Vegas Zatanna by dfridolfs
This is one of those cool pages I'll be fighting Dustin for later. And it's pretty cool cuz it's a real collaborative page.

Sometimes due to deadlines (heck always due to deadlines), it can be easier to cut corners. So instead of penciling out the entire background on this page and giving it to me....sometimes it's easier for the penciler to "draw" it in ink. So that's what happened here.

I can be sort of a clean almost rigid inker to a fault, so it's cool to see sort of a more alive and dirty inked version like Dustin did. I totally dig it.

This is part 1 of a 2 part story in Detective Comics, featuring Zatanna, Scarface, and the origin of the new Ventriloquist. Pretty snazzy.

And to top it all off...we worked on this issue after we got back from doing a couple of Vegas store signings.

Pencils & Backgrounds Inks: Dustin Nguyen
Zatanna Inks: Me!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When y'all cut corners, magic ensues.

(No pun intended. Really.)

Wow, that's really awesome page, Derek!

Really love your clean lines for Zatanna against the sketchy inked Vegas background.

There's actually a previous issue where he helped out on some pages, so it'd be interesting to see if anyone spots that.

Wow, this page is dynamite! I love that speckly, hatchwork-heavy style Dustin used in the city, and combined with your clean, solid Zatanna figure, you can't lose on this one!

I know exactly what you mean about working too cleanly. I wish I could fill a page with the kind of beautiful, almost random feeling splatters, lines, and spots that some artists can. Are you familiar with Danijel Zezelj's work? My God, that guy looks like he channels earth spirits when he draws, and it makes me weak in the knees to see it. Here's a link to his website:

Yeah there's a lot of great artists like him that seem to really funnel some type of wild creativity. I wish I could let loose in that way but it ends up looking like a forced mess than something worth looking at.

What ink do you use? It's so solid and crisp compared to the portion that Duss did. I always assumed you tweaked it in PS to darking the inks for your gallery.

It is beautiful.

You'll have to ask Duss what he uses since I'm not sure the types of inks & markers he uses for stuff like this.

I pretty much stick with Speedball Super Black india ink. Usually 2 bottles are always around...I newer one to do the pen work, and an older one (when the ink starts getting thicker) to do all the fill-in stuff.
